Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts Shines Bright at the 13th Annual Buckley Awards
Fort Worth, TX—Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts (FWAFA) stood tall on May 23 as some of the biggest names in North Texas musical theater were on hand at Casa Mañana for the presentation of the 13th annual Betty Lynn Buckley Awards. Congratulations to all of the FWAFA students who participated in The Drowsy Chaperone, and especially the Buckley Award winners: Stormy Czupil, Kristi Salinas, Chelsea Branscum, Faith Savage, Alexander Cook, and Ben Allen.
It is a testament to the dedication of the entire theater department at FWAFA that The Drowsy Chaperone garnered nominations in all eligible categories. Of these nominations, FWAFA took home awards in four categories. Stormy Czupil and Kristi Salinas were honored for Excellence in Costume Design, while Chelsea Branscum and Faith Savage won the award for Excellence in Choreography. Sophomore Alex Cook took home the Buckley for Best Male Supporting Actor. Graduating senior Ben Allen capped an already illustrious theater career at FWAFA with the award for Best Male Actor.
In addition to the prestige of winning a Buckley Award, honorees also take home a $1,000 scholarship to reward their efforts. As winner of the Best Male Actor trophy, Allen receives a trip to New York City to attend the National High School Musical Theater Awards, a trip he is eagerly anticipating. “I’ve heard for years New York is so great, New York is so awesome and now I finally get to go see it!” says Allen. “I’m over the moon, I can’t wait.”
In 2001, Texas Boys Choir, Inc. expanded upon its mission by opening its first public charter school, Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts (FWAFA), to provide arts and academic education for boys and girls in grades 3 to 12. In addition to a rigorous classroom schedule, students receive training in choir, dance, theater, instrumental music, and the visual arts. Admission to FWAFA is by audition and over 500 students are enrolled this year.
